CONTINUOUSLY VARIABLE TRANSAXLE FLUID ADJUSTMENT

PROCEDURE


  1. PRECAUTIONS AND WORK DESCRIPTION


    1. The K411 continuously variable transaxle does not have an oil filler tube or dipstick. When adding fluid, add fluid through the refill hole in the transaxle case. The fluid level can be adjusted by draining excess fluid (allowing excess fluid to overflow) through the No. 1 transmission oil filler tube of the oil pan.

      Tech Tips

      "Overflow" indicates the condition under which fluid comes out of the overflow plug hole.

    2. When adding fluid, add the specified amount of fluid while the engine is cold. Then, warm up the engine to circulate the fluid in the transaxle and adjust the fluid level with the engine idling at the specified fluid temperature.

    3. The K411 continuously variable transaxle requires Toyota Genuine CVT fluid TC.

    4. When adjusting the fluid level, park the vehicle on level ground. Longitudinal tilt should be within +/- 1°.

    5. When adjusting the fluid level, turn off all electrical devices, such as the air conditioning, headlights and electric fan, to reduce electrical load.

    6. The fluid temperature in the text indicates "A/T Oil Temperature 1" displayed on the intelligent tester.

    7. Perform the adjustment according to the following procedures and notes.

  2. WORK FLOW


    1. The adjustment should be performed according to the procedures referenced in the work flow below.

  3. BEFORE FILLING TRANSAXLE WITH FLUID

    Note

    If the transaxle is hot (fluid temperature is high), wait until the fluid temperature becomes the same as the ambient temperature before starting the following procedure (recommended fluid temperature: approximately 20°C [68°F])


    1. A01VIZK

      Lift the vehicle.

      Note

      Set the vehicle on a lift so that the vehicle is kept level when it is lifted up (make sure the tilt angle from the front to rear of the vehicle is within +/- 1°).

    2. Remove the engine under cover LH.

  4. PERFORM INITIAL FILLING

    Note

    After performing any of the following operations, it is not necessary to perform the initial filling procedure. Proceed to the Add Specified Amount procedure (Step 5).

    Operations that do not Require Initial Filling

    • Repair of fluid leak, etc.

    • Removal and installation of the oil cooler.

      Remove the refill plug and gasket from the continuously variable transaxle.

    2. A01VLUD

      Using a 6 mm socket hexagon wrench, remove the overflow plug and gasket from the continuously variable transaxle.

      Note


      • If fluid comes out after removing the overflow plug, wait until the fluid flow slows and only drops come out.

      • In this case, it is not necessary to perform the initial filling (Skip operation "d" and "e").

      *1 No. 1 Transmission Oil Filler Tube

      Using a 6 mm socket hexagon wrench, check that the No. 1 transmission oil filler tube is tightened to the specified torque.

      Torque:
      0.8 N*m  { 8.2 kgf*cm, 7 in.*lbf }

      Note

      If the No. 1 transmission oil filler tube is not tightened to the specified torque, the amount of fluid cannot be precisely adjusted.

      Tech Tips

      To check the torque of the No. 1 transmission oil filler tube, insert the hexagon socket into the overflow plug hole.

    4. Perform initial filling.


      1. A01VGML

        Fill fluid from the refill hole until it flows out from the overflow plug hole.

        Note

        Use Toyota Genuine CVT fluid TC.

    5. A01VJ1O

      Wait until the fluid flow slows and only drops come out.

    6. A01VLUD

      Temporarily install the gasket and overflow plug.

      Tech Tips

      Reuse the old gasket. The plug will be removed again to adjust the fluid level.

  5. ADD SPECIFIED AMOUNT OF FLUID


    1. A01VEF2

      Remove the refill plug and gasket from the continuously variable transaxle (when initial filling is not performed).

    2. A01VL6M

      Fill fluid from the refill hole with the correct amount of fluid as listed in the table below.

      Note


      • The refill amount differs depending on the operation that was performed.

      • If two or more operations that were performed, add the largest amount in operations that were performed.

      Temporarily install the gasket and refill plug to avoid fluid spillage.

      Tech Tips

      Reuse the old gasket. The plug will be removed again to adjust the fluid level.

    4. Lower the vehicle.

  6. BLEED ELECTRIC OIL PUMP (w/ Stop And Start System)


    1. Air bleeding of the electric oil pump.


      1. Connect the intelligent tester to the DLC3.

      2. Turn the ignition switch to ON.

      3. Turn the tester on.

      4. Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Stop and Start / Utility / Oil Pump Air Bleeding.

      5. In accordance with the display on the tester, perform the oil pump air bleeding.

        Tech Tips


        • During the CVT oil pressure calibration, the engine idle speed will increase.

        • When "Complete" is displayed on the screen, the CVT oil pressure calibration is completed.

        • The learned values cannot be cleared by only disconnecting and reconnecting the cable to the negative (-) battery terminal.

  7. ADJUST FLUID TEMPERATURE


    1. When using the intelligent tester:


      1. Connect the intelligent tester to the DLC3 with the ignition switch off.

      2. Turn the ignition switch to ON and turn the intelligent tester on.

      3. Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine and ETC / Active Test / Connect the TC and TE1.

      4. Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine and ECT / Data List / A/T Oil Temperature 1.

      5. Enter the Active Test menus: Connect the TC and TE1 / ON.

        Tech Tips

        The indicator lights on the combination meter blink to indicate the DTC output when Active Test "Connect the TC and TE1 / ON" is performed.

    2. When not using the intelligent tester:

        Using SST, connect terminals 13 (TC) and 4 (CG) of the DLC3 with the ignition switch off.

    3. Depress and hold the brake pedal.

    4. Start the engine.

      Note

      Check that electrical systems, such as the air conditioning system, audio system and lighting system, are off.

    5. Slowly move the shift lever from P to D, and then back to P (keep the shift lever in each position for approximately 3 seconds).

      Tech Tips

      Slowly move the shift lever to circulate the fluid through each part of the transaxle.

      While observing the D shift indicator on the combination meter, move the shift lever back and forth between N and D at an interval of 1.5 seconds for 6 seconds or more.

      Note

      Do not pause for more than 1.5 seconds.

      Tech Tips

      Performing this operation will cause the vehicle to enter fluid temperature detection mode.

    7. A01VHJ9

      Check that the D shift indicator comes on for 2 seconds.

      Tech Tips


      • When fluid temperature detection mode is activated, the D shift indicator on the combination meter comes on for 2 seconds.

      • If the D shift indicator does not come on for 2 seconds, return to the step where terminals are first connected and perform the procedure again.

    8. Move the shift lever from N to P.

    9. Release the brake pedal.

    10. Disconnect the terminals of the DLC3.


      1. When using the intelligent tester.


        • Enter the Active Test menus: Connect the TC and TE1 / OFF.

      2. When not using the intelligent tester.


        • Remove SST from terminals 13 (TC) and 4 (CG).

        Note

        Make sure that the terminals are not connected. If the terminals are connected, the fluid level cannot be precisely adjusted due to fluctuations in engine speed.

        Tech Tips


        • Disconnecting terminals activates engine idle speed control mode.

        • In engine idle speed control mode, engine idle speed control starts when the fluid temperature reaches the specified temperature and the engine speed is maintained.

        • Even after the terminals are disconnected, fluid temperature detection mode is active until the ignition switch is turned off.

    11. Adjust the fluid temperature to the normal operating temperature.


      1. Check the fluid temperature by the D shift indicator.

        Tech Tips


        • In the fluid temperature detection mode, the D shift indicator comes on, goes off, or blinks depending on the fluid temperature.

        • The fluid filling procedure should be performed when the D shift indicator is on (the fluid temperature is within the normal operating temperature range).

      2. Adjust the fluid temperature.


        • If the D shift indicator is off [Below Normal Operating Temperature: 35°C (95°F) or less]: Warm up the engine with the engine idling in the engine idle speed control mode until the D shift indicator turns on.


        • If the D shift indicator is on [Normal Operating Temperature: 35 to 45°C (95 to 113°F)]: Immediately proceed to the Adjust Fluid Level procedure (Step 8).


        • If the D shift indicator blinks [Above Normal Operating Temperature: 45°C (113°F) or more]: Stop the engine and wait until the fluid temperature drops to 35°C (95°F) or less (the D shift indicator goes off). Then perform the Adjust Fluid Temperature procedure again from the beginning.

  8. ADJUST FLUID LEVEL

    CAUTION:

    Use caution while the engine is idling and the radiator fan is operating.


    1. Lift the vehicle.

      Note

      Set the vehicle on a lift so that the vehicle is kept level when it is lifted up (make sure the tilt angle from the front to rear of the vehicle is within +/-1°).

    2. A01VLUD

      Using a 6 mm socket hexagon wrench, remove the overflow plug and gasket.

      CAUTION:

      Be careful as the fluid coming out of the overflow plug hole is hot.

    3. Check the amount of fluid that comes out of the overflow plug hole.


      • If the amount of fluid that comes out of the overflow plug hole is large, proceed to *1.

      • If no fluid comes out of the overflow plug hole, proceed to *2.

      Note

      If only a small amount of fluid (approximately 5 cc) comes out of the overflow plug hole, then only fluid remaining in the No. 1 transmission oil filler tube has come out. This is not considered to be overflow.

    4. A01VGML

      *2:

      If no fluid comes out of the overflow plug hole, remove the refill plug and gasket. Then add transaxle fluid through the refill hole until fluid comes out of the overflow plug hole. Wait until the fluid flow slows and only drops come out.

      Note

      Use Toyota Genuine CVT fluid TC.

    5. A01VJ1O

      *1:

      If the amount of fluid that comes out of the overflow plug hole is large, wait until the fluid flow slows and only drops come out.

      Tech Tips

      The fluid flow will not completely stop because the fluid expands as its temperature increases.

    6. A01VLUD

      Install a new gasket and the overflow plug.

      Torque:
      40 N*m  { 408 kgf*cm, 30 ft.*lbf }
    7. A01VEF2

      Install a new gasket and the refill plug.

      Torque:
      49 N*m  { 500 kgf*cm, 36 ft.*lbf }
    8. Lower the vehicle.

    9. Turn the ignition switch off.

      Tech Tips

      Turning the ignition switch off exits fluid temperature detection mode.

    10. Remove the intelligent tester from the DLC3 (when using the intelligent tester).

  9. AFTER FILLING TRANSAXLE


    1. Lift the vehicle.

    2. Clean each part.

    3. Check for fluid leaks.

    4. Install the engine under cover LH and front lower bumper absorber.

    5. Lower the vehicle.
