STARTER(except Cold Area Specification Vehicles) DISASSEMBLY

PROCEDURE

1. REMOVE MAGNET STARTER SWITCH ASSEMBLY

   

   
   

   1. Remove the nut, and disconnect the lead wire from the magnetic switch terminal.

   2. 

      Remove the 2 nuts holding the magnetic switch onto the starter housing.

   3.

      *1	Drive Lever
      *2	Hook

      Pull the magnetic switch and while lifting the front part of the magnetic switch, release the plunger hook from the drive lever, then remove the magnetic switch.

2. REMOVE STARTER YOKE ASSEMBLY

   
   

   1. 

      Remove the 2 bolts, disconnect the starter yoke assembly and disconnect the drive lever.

3. REMOVE STARTER COMMUTATOR END FRAME ASSEMBLY

   
   

   1. 

      Remove the end cover.

4. REMOVE STARTER BRUSH HOLDER ASSEMBLY

   
   

   1. Hold the starter armature assembly of shaft in a vise between aluminum plates.

      Note

      Do not overtighten the vise.

   2. 

      Remove the bush holder plate.

   3. 

      Remove the 4 brush springs and the brush holder.

5. REMOVE STARTER ARMATURE ASSEMBLY

   
   

   1. Remove the starter armature assembly from the starter yoke.

6. REMOVE STARTER CLUTCH SUB-ASSEMBLY

   
   

   1. Hold the starter armature assembly in a vise between aluminum plates.

      Note

      Do not overtighten the vise.

   2. 

      Using a screwdriver, tap the inside stop collar toward the armature.

   3. 

      Using a screwdriver, pry off the snap ring.

   4. Pull the stop collar and starter clutch out of the armature.
