COOLING FAN SYSTEM ON-VEHICLE INSPECTION

PROCEDURE

  1. INSPECT COOLING FAN SYSTEM OPERATION AT LOW TEMPERATURES

    CAUTION:

    • When checking the thermostat open timing, do not touch rotating components such as the cooling fan.

    • Touching rotating components such as the cooling fan could result in your hand or clothing getting caught and pulled in.

    1. Check and ensure the following conditions:

      1. The ignition switch is off.

      2. The engine coolant temperature is less than 83°C (181°F).

      3. The A/C switch is off (w/ air conditioning system).

    2. Turn the ignition switch to ON and wait for approximately 10 seconds. Check that the fan is not operating.

    3. Check that the fan operates when the water temperature sensor connector is disconnected.

  2. INSPECT COOLING FAN SYSTEM OPERATION AT HIGH TEMPERATURES

    1. Check and ensure the following conditions:

      1. Warm up the engine.

      2. The engine coolant temperature is less than 94°C (201°F).

      3. The A/C switch is off (w/ air conditioning system).

    2. Start the engine. Check that the fan is not operating.

    3. Check that the fan starts operating when the engine coolant temperature reaches approximately 97°C (207°F).
