MONITOR DESCRIPTION
The Variable Valve Timing system (VVT) on the intake camsafts and the exhaust camshafts can vary the timing by approximately 35°on exhaust and 53°on inlet. The camshaft relative position is varied by a system of vanes mounted on the drive end of the camshaft, Each VVT oil control valve modulates a spool valve position in accordance with the drive signal duty cycle, this in turns controls the oil pressure applied to the vanes. A 50% duty cycle applied to the valve will hold the valve current timing by preventing oil flow from the VVT controller housing, a duty cycle less than 50% will retard the valve timing, a duty cycle greater then 50% will advance the valve timing. The ECM regulates this duty cycle based on the feedback signal from the respective camshaft position sensor to optimise the camshaft timing.
CAUTION / NOTICE / HINT
Tech Tips
DTC P0011 may be stored when foreign matter in the engine oil is caught in some parts of the system. The DTC will remain stored even if the system returns to normal after a short time. That foreign matter may then be captured by the oil filter.
Read freeze frame data using the GTS. The ECM records vehicle and driving condition information as freeze frame data the moment a DTC is stored. When troubleshooting, freeze frame data can help determine if the vehicle was moving or stationary, if the engine was warmed up or not, if the air fuel ratio was lean or rich, and other data from the time the malfunction occurred.
PROCEDURE
CHECK ANY OTHER DTCS OUTPUT (IN ADDITION TO DTC P0011)
Connect the GTS to the DLC3.
Turn the engine switch on (IG).
Turn the GTS on.
Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine / Trouble Codes.
Read the DTCs.

Tech Tips
If any DTCs other than P0011 are output, troubleshoot those DTCs first.

PERFORM ACTIVE TEST USING GTS (CONTROL THE VVT LINEAR)
Connect the GTS to the DLC3.
Start the engine.
Turn the GTS on.
Turn the A/C switch on.
Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine / Active Test / Control the VVT Linear (Bank 1).
Check the engine speed while operating the camshaft timing oil control valve assembly (for intake camshaft) using the GTS.

|
Tech Tips
Refer to "Data List / Active Test" [VVT OCV Duty #1 and VVT Change Angle #1].
If the result is not acceptable, cool the engine (engine coolant temperature is 50°C (122°F) or less) and perform the Active Test again.
