If any of the following DTCs are stored, the ECM enters fail-safe mode to allow the vehicle to be driven temporarily or stops fuel injection.
| DTC Code | Component | Fail-Safe Operation | Fail-Safe Deactivation Condition |
|---|---|---|---|
| P0011 P0015 |
VVT system |
|
Pass condition detected |
| P0131 P0132 P0133 P0134 P0135 |
Heated oxygen sensor (sensor 1) | The ECM turns off the heated oxygen sensor (sensor 1) heater. | Engine switch off |
| P0137 P0138 P0139 P0140 P0141 |
Heated oxygen sensor (sensor 2) | The ECM turns off the heated oxygen sensor (sensor 2) heater. | Engine switch off |
| P0101 P0102 P0103 |
Mass air flow meter | The ECM calculates ignition timing according to the engine speed and throttle valve position. | Pass condition detected |
| P0112 P0113 |
Intake air temperature sensor | The ECM estimates the intake air temperature to be 20°C (68°F). | Pass condition detected |
| P0116 P0117 P0118 |
Engine coolant temperature sensor | The ECM estimates the engine coolant temperature to be 80°C (176°F). | Pass condition detected |
| P0122 P0123 P0222 P0223 P0601 P0604 P0605 P0606 P060C P0638 P1104 P1106 P2102 P2103 P2104 P2105 P2106 P2106 P2107 P2108 P2119 P2135 P2173 |
Electronic throttle control system | The ECM cuts off throttle actuator current and the throttle valve is returned to a 5.5° throttle position by the return spring. The ECM then adjusts the engine output by controlling fuel injection (intermittent fuel-cut) and ignition timing in accordance with the accelerator pedal angle to allow the vehicle to continue at minimal speed*1. |
Pass condition detected and then engine switch turned off |

When a catalyst-damaging misfire occurs (MIL blinking), the following fail-safe operation is performed for catalyst overheat malfunction prevention.
|
Pass condition detected and then engine switch turned off |
| P0327 P0328 |
Knock control sensor | The ECM sets the ignition timing to maximum retard. | Engine switch off |
| P0335 | Crankshaft Position Sensor |
|
Pass condition detected and then engine switch turned off |
| P0351 P0352 P0353 P0354 |
Ignition coil assembly | The ECM cuts the fuel injection. | Pass condition detected |
| P0561 P0562 |
System Voltage | The alternator command is fixed. | Pass condition detected and then engine switch turned off |
| P0571 P0703 |
Stop light switch assembly | The accelerator pedal opening angle is fixed when there is an accelerato rpedal malfunction or history of a malfunction. | Pass condition detected and then engine switch turned off |
| P1107 P1108 P1109 |
Vacuum sensor (manifold absolute pressure sensor) | The ECM calculates the manifold absolute pressure based on the engine speed and throttle valve position. | Pass condition detected |
| P2122 P2123 P2127 P2128 P2138 |
Accelerator pedal position sensor | The accelerator pedal position sensor has 2 sensor circuits: Main and Sub. If either circuit malfunctions, the ECM limits the engine output. If both circuits malfunction, the ECM regards the accelerator pedal as being released. As a result, the throttle valve is closed and the engine idles. |
Pass condition detected and then engine switch turned off |
*1: The vehicle can be driven slowly when the accelerator pedal is depressed firmly and slowly. If the accelerator pedal is depressed quickly, the vehicle may speed up and slow down erratically.
*2: Misfire-related fail-safe operations occur when catalyst overheat malfunctions occur.
