DTC No. Detection Item DTC Detection Condition Trouble Area MIL Memory
P0012 Camshaft Position "A" - Timing Over-Retarded (Bank 1) With engine warmed up and while driving in urban area (engine speed 4000 rpm or less), valve timing on bank 1 intake side remains in retarded position (1 trip detection logic).
  • Camshaft timing gear assembly

  • Cam timing control motor with EDU assembly

  • ECM

Comes on DTC stored

MONITOR DESCRIPTION

This DTC is output when a valve timing stuck condition is detected. With the engine speed at 4000 rpm or less in the retard angle position, if the valve timing does not vary, and there is a large difference in the target and actual valve timing, it is determined that a malfunction has occurred. If this condition is detected while driving, a DTC is output (1 trip detection logic).

CONFIRMATION DRIVING PATTERN

  1. Connect the GTS to the DLC3.

  2. Turn the ignition switch to ON.

  3. Turn the GTS on.

  4. Clear the DTCs (even if no DTCs are stored, perform the clear DTC procedure).

  5. Turn the ignition switch off and wait for at least 30 seconds.

  6. Turn the ignition switch to ON.

  7. Turn the GTS on.

  8. Drive the vehicle in an urban area for 5 minutes.

    CAUTION:

When performing the confirmation driving pattern, obey all speed limits and traffic laws.

  9. Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine and ECT / Trouble Codes.

  10. Read the pending DTCs.

    Tech Tips

    • If a pending DTC is output, the system is malfunctioning.

    • If a pending DTC is not output, perform the following procedure.

  11. Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine and ECT / Utility / All Readiness.

  12. Input the DTC: P0012

  13. Check the DTC judgment result.

    GTS Display Description
    NORMAL
    • DTC judgment completed

    • System normal

    ABNORMAL
    • DTC judgment completed

    • System abnormal

    INCOMPLETE
    • DTC judgment not completed

    • Perform driving pattern after confirming DTC enabling conditions

    N/A
    • Unable to perform DTC judgment

    • Number of DTCs which do not fulfill DTC preconditions has reached ECU memory limit

    Tech Tips

    • If the judgment result shows NORMAL, the system is normal.

    • If the judgment result shows ABNORMAL, the system has a malfunction.

    • If the judgment result shows INCOMPLETE or N/A, perform the Confirmation Driving Pattern and check the DTC judgment result again.

CAUTION / NOTICE / HINT

Tech Tips

  • The GTS only:

By using the Control the VVT-iE Linear (Bank 1) Active Test, it can be determined if the VVT-iE system is malfunctioning.

    1. Connect the GTS to the DLC3.

    2. Turn the ignition switch to ON.

    3. Turn the GTS on.

    4. Start the engine and warm it up.

    5. Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine and ECT / Active Test / Control the VVT-iE Linear (Bank 1) / Data List / VVT Target Angle #1 and VVT Change Angle #1.

    6. Perform the Active Test operation with the engine speed at 1500 rpm.

      OK:
Active Test Movement Order Difference between "VVT Target Angle #1" and "VVT Change Angle #1"
      0 deg → 10 deg → 20 deg → 40 deg → 10 deg → 0 deg → 10 deg → END Within 5 DegFR
  • Read freeze frame data using the GTS. The ECM records vehicle and driving condition information as freeze frame data the moment a DTC is stored. When troubleshooting, freeze frame data can help determine if the vehicle was moving or stationary, if the engine was warmed up or not, if the air fuel ratio was lean or rich, and other data from the time the malfunction occurred.
