P0016 Crankshaft Position - Camshaft Position Correlation (Bank 1 Sensor A)

DESCRIPTION

In the VVT (Variable Valve Timing) system, the appropriate intake valve open and close timing is controlled by the ECM. The ECM performs intake valve control by performing the following: 1) controlling the camshaft and camshaft timing oil control valve assembly, and operating the camshaft timing gear; and 2) changing the relative positions of the camshaft and crankshaft.

Tech Tips

Read freeze frame data using the GTS. The ECM records vehicle and driving condition information as freeze frame data the moment a DTC is stored. When troubleshooting, freeze frame data can help determine if the vehicle was moving or stationary, if the engine was warmed up or not, if the air fuel ratio was lean or rich, and other data from the time the malfunction occurred.

PROCEDURE


  1. CHECK FOR ANY OTHER DTCS OUTPUT (IN ADDITION TO DTC P0016)


    1. Connect the GTS to the DLC3.

    2. Turn the ignition switch to ON.

    3. Turn the GTS on.

    4. Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine and ECT / Trouble codes.

    5. Read DTCs.

      Result
      Result Proceed to
      P0016 is output A
      P0016 and other DTCs are output B

      Tech Tips

      If any DTCs other than P0016 are output, perform troubleshooting for those DTCs first.

  2. PERFORM ACTIVE TEST USING GTS (CONTROL THE VVT SYSTEM (BANK1))

    Tech Tips

    If the VVT system can be operated through the Active Test, it can be assumed that the VVT system is operating normally.


    1. Connect the GTS to the DLC3.

    2. Start the engine.

    3. Turn the GTS on.

    4. Warm up the engine.

    5. Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine and ECT / Active Test / Control the VVT system (Bank 1) / VVT Change Angle #1 VVT OCV Duty #1.

    6. Check that the VVT Change Angle varies when operating the camshaft timing oil control valve assembly using GTS.

      OK
      The VVT Change Angle #1 value and engine speed vary.

  3. CHECK ENGINE MECHANICAL SYSTEM


    1. Check for mechanical malfunctions that affect the valve timing, such as a jumped tooth or stretching of the timing chain.

    REPAIR OR REPLACE MALFUNCTIONING PARTS, COMPONENT AND AREA

  4. CHECK WHETHER DTC OUTPUT RECURS (DTC P0016)


    1. Connect the GTS to the DLC3.

    2. Turn the ignition switch to ON.

    3. Turn the GTS on.

    4. Clear DTCs Click here.

    5. Turn the ignition switch off and wait for at least 30 seconds.

    6. Turn the ignition switch to ON.

    7. Turn the GTS on.

    8. Start the engine and warm it up.

    9. Drive the vehicle for 20 minutes or more.

    10. Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine and ECT / Trouble Codes.

    11. Read pending DTCs.

      Result
      Result Proceed to
      DTC is not output A
      DTC P0016 is output B

  5. INSPECT CAMSHAFT TIMING OIL CONTROL VALVE ASSEMBLY

  6. INSPECT OIL CONTROL VALVE FILTER


    1. Remove the oil control valve filter Click here.

    2. Check that the filter is not clogged.

      OK
      Filter is not clogged.

    CLEAN OR REPLACE OIL CONTROL VALVE FILTER

  7. REPLACE CAMSHAFT TIMING SPROCKET ASSEMBLY
