MONITOR DESCRIPTION

The ECM optimizes the exhaust valve timing using the Variable Valve Timing (VVT) system to control the exhaust camshaft. The VVT system includes the ECM, cam timing oil control solenoid assembly (for exhaust camshaft), camshaft timing oil control valve assembly (for exhaust camshaft) [camshaft timing gear bolt] and camshaft timing exhaust gear assembly. The ECM sends a target duty-cycle control signal to the cam timing oil control solenoid assembly (for exhaust camshaft). The camshaft timing oil control valve assembly (for exhaust camshaft) [camshaft timing gear bolt] is operated to control the oil pressure supplied to the camshaft timing exhaust gear assembly based on this signal. The camshaft timing exhaust gear assembly can advance or retard the exhaust camshaft.

If the difference between the target and actual exhaust valve timing is large, and changes in the actual exhaust valve timing are small, the ECM interprets this as the camshaft timing exhaust gear assembly stuck malfunction and stores a DTC.


DTC P001400 and P002400 (Advanced Camshaft Timing) is subject to 2 trip detection logic.

DTC P001500 and P002500 (Retarded Camshaft Timing) is subject to 1 trip detection logic.

These DTCs indicate that the camshaft timing exhaust gear assembly cannot operate properly due to a camshaft timing oil control valve assembly (for exhaust camshaft) [camshaft timing gear bolt] malfunction or the presence of foreign matter in the camshaft timing oil control valve assembly (for exhaust camshaft) [camshaft timing gear bolt].

  1. Connect the GTS to the DLC3.

  2. Turn the power switch on (IG) and turn the GTS on.

  3. Clear the DTCs (even if no DTCs are stored, perform the clear DTC procedure).

    Tech Tips


    • P001400 or P002400 is output:

      Clear the DTC not using the GTS.

    • P001500 or P002500 is output:

      Clear the DTC using the GTS.

  4. Turn the power switch off and wait for at least 30 seconds.

  5. Turn the power switch on (IG) and turn the GTS on [A].

  6. Put the engine in Inspection Mode (2WD for measuring Exhaust Gas).

  7. Start the engine and warm it up until the engine coolant temperature reaches 75°C (167°F) or higher [B].

  8. With the engine running, accelerate the vehicle to 75 km/h (46 mph) or more by depressing the accelerator pedal for 10 seconds or more [C].

    CAUTION:

    When performing the confirmation driving pattern, obey all speed limits and traffic laws.

    Tech Tips

    If the engine stops, further depress the accelerator pedal to restart the engine.

  9. Idle the engine for 100 seconds or more [D].

    • P001400 or P002400 is output:

      With the park (P) selected.

    • P001500 or P002500 is output:

      With the drive (D) selected.

  10. Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine / Trouble Codes [E].

  11. Read the pending DTCs.

    Tech Tips


    • If a pending DTC is output, the system is malfunctioning.

    • If a pending DTC is not output, perform the following procedure.

  12. Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine / Utility / All Readiness.

  13. Input the DTC: P001400, P001500, P002400 or P002500.

  14. Check the DTC judgment result.

    • If the judgment result shows NORMAL, the system is normal.

    • If the judgment result shows ABNORMAL, the system has a malfunction.

    • If the judgment result shows INCOMPLETE, perform steps [F] through [H].

  15. With the engine running, accelerate the vehicle to 75 km/h (46 mph) or more by depressing the accelerator pedal for 10 seconds or more [F].

  • If DTC P001400 or P001500 is output, check the VVT system (for exhaust camshaft of bank 1) circuit.

  • If DTC P002400 or P002500 is output, check the VVT system (for exhaust camshaft of bank 2) circuit.

  • Bank 1 refers to the bank that includes the No. 1 cylinder*.

    *: The No. 1 cylinder is the cylinder which is farthest from the transmission.

  • Bank 2 refers to the bank that does not include the No. 1 cylinder.

  • DTC P001400, P001500, P002400 or P002500 may be stored when foreign matter in the engine oil is caught in some parts of the system. The DTC will remain stored even if the system returns to normal after a short time. That foreign matter may then be captured by the oil filter.

  • Read freeze frame data using the GTS. The ECM records vehicle and driving condition information as freeze frame data the moment a DTC is stored. When troubleshooting, freeze frame data can help determine if the vehicle was moving or stationary, if the engine was warmed up or not, if the air fuel ratio was lean or rich, and other data from the time the malfunction occurred.

  1. CHECK ANY OTHER DTCS OUTPUT (IN ADDITION TO DTC P001400, P001500, P002400 OR P002500)


    1. Connect the GTS to the DLC3.

    2. Turn the power switch on (IG).

    3. Turn the GTS on.

    4. Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine / Trouble Codes.

    5. Read the DTCs.

    2. Turn the crankshaft pulley and align its groove with the TDC timing mark of the timing chain cover.

    3. Check that the timing marks of the camshaft timing gear assemblies and camshaft timing exhaust gear assemblies are aligned with the timing marks of the bearing caps as shown in the illustration.
