ADD TRANSMISSION FLUID
This transmission requires Toyota Genuine ATF WS.
Make sure to enter fluid temperature detection mode before checking or adding transmission fluid.
Always maintain the vehicle in a level position when adding, checking and adjusting the transmission fluid.
When a large volume of fluid must be replenished (such as when replacing the transmission valve body assembly or removing and installing the oil pan and drain plug), perform tasks from "Add Transmission Fluid" to "Adjust Transmission Fluid".
When a large volume of transmission fluid must be replenished (such as when bleeding oil, replacing the hybrid vehicle transmission assembly and when the oil cooler hose has been disconnected), perform "Adjust Transmission Fluid".
Check vehicle condition
Connect the GTS to the DLC3 with the power switch off.
Turn the power switch on (IG).
Turn the GTS on.
Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Hybrid Control / Data List / Transmission Fluid Temperature.
Tester Display

Transmission Fluid Temperature
The temperature of the transmission fluid will rise if the power switch is turned on (READY). Therefore, check the Data List while the power switch is turned on (IG).
Before beginning work, be sure to check that the transmission fluid temperature is lower limit of the permissible temperature range for adjusting fluid levels or less.
The Permissible Temperature Range for Adjusting Transmission Fluid
---
30 to 40°C (86 to 104°F)
The transmission fluid level cannot be accurately adjusted if the transmission fluid temperature is higher than the permissible temperature range for adjusting fluid levels.
Move the vehicle to a cool location and make sure that the transmission fluid temperature is below the lower limit of the permissible temperature range for adjusting fluid levels or less.
Confirming the work
Perform the adjustment according to the procedures referenced below.
[*1] Add transmission fluid.
Lift the vehicle.
The transmission fluid level cannot be measured accurately if the vehicle is not level. Make sure it is held level.
Remove the refill plug and gasket from the hybrid vehicle transmission assembly.
Using a 5 mm hexagon socket wrench, remove the overflow plug and gasket from the hybrid vehicle transmission assembly.
Add transmission fluid to the refill hole until it flows out of the overflow plug hole.
Use Toyota Genuine ATF WS.
Be sure to add transmission fluid slowly. If transmission fluid is added quickly, the transmission fluid may hit internal parts and bounce back, resulting in transmission fluid coming out of the refill hole.
Wait until the transmission fluid flow slows and only drips come out.
Using a 5 mm hexagon socket wrench, temporarily install the overflow plug and gasket to the hybrid vehicle transmission assembly.
Reuse the old gasket as the overflow plug will be removed again.
Pour the specified amount of transmission fluid into the refill hole.
Standard Capacity
---
1.6 liters (1.7 US qts, 1.4 Imp. qts)
Use Toyota Genuine ATF WS.
Be sure to add transmission fluid slowly. If transmission fluid is added quickly, the transmission fluid may hit internal parts and bounce back, resulting in transmission fluid coming out of the refill hole.
Temporarily install the gasket and refill plug to the hybrid vehicle transmission assembly.
Gasket replacement and tightening of the refill plug are performed after the transmission fluid level is adjusted.
ADJUST TRANSMISSION FLUID
Always adjust the transmission fluid level when the fluid temperature is appropriate for checking the fluid level.
Use the shift position indicator light in the vehicle combination meter or the GTS to check whether the fluid temperature is appropriate for checking the fluid level. Even when using the GTS, it is necessary to switch to fluid temperature detection mode for optimum fluid temperature control.
[*2] Switch to fluid temperature detection mode (When using GTS)

If the transmission fluid temperature is higher than the permissible temperature range for adjusting fluid levels, suspend work immediately. Lower the temperature to the lower limit of the permissible temperature range or less by moving the vehicle to a cooler location, etc.
Depress and hold the brake pedal.
Turn the power switch on (READY).
Make sure to place the electrical key transmitter within the vehicle interior detection area.
To reduce load, make sure that all electrical systems, such as the air conditioning and audio system are off.
Slowly move the shift position from P to M in the order of P → R → N → D → M to circulate the transmission fluid through each part of the transmission, and then move the shift position back to P.
Keep the shift lever in each position for approximately 3 seconds.

From the shift lever in D, move the shift lever between N and D continuously within 1.5 seconds for 6 seconds or more to switch to fluid temperature detection mode.
Hold the shift lever in N for 1 seconds or more and hold the shift lever in D for 0.1 seconds or more before moving the shift lever.
When switched to fluid temperature detection mode, the combination meter D shift position indicator display illuminates for 2 seconds and then turns off, no matter what position the shift lever is in.
Return the shift position to P and turn off the Active Test "Connect the TC and TE1" on the GTS. (Disconnect the TC terminal)
Make sure that the TC terminal is disconnected. If the TC terminal is connected, the transmission fluid level cannot be precisely adjusted due to fluctuations in engine speed.
Even after the TC terminal is disconnected, fluid temperature detection mode is active until the power switch is turned off.

Using a 5 mm hexagon socket wrench, remove the overflow plug and gasket from the hybrid vehicle transmission assembly.
Be careful as the transmission fluid that comes out is hot.
[*4] Check that the condition of the transmission fluid coming out of the overflow hole.
Check the transmission fluid level with the power switch on (READY). Therefore, make sure not to touch the high temperature parts such as the exhaust pipe, etc.
If only a small amount of transmission fluid (approximately 5 cc (0.3 cu.in.)) comes out of the overflow hole, it is possible that only the transmission fluid remaining in the overflow tube has come out. This is not considered to be overflow and the transmission fluid must be refilled.
Overflow refers to when transmission fluid is discharged from the overflow tube.
When transmission fluid comes out. (Go to "When transmission fluid comes out")
When transmission fluid does not come out. (Go to "When transmission fluid does not come out")
[*5] When transmission fluid comes out:
If the amount of transmission fluid that flows out is large, wait until the transmission fluid flow slows and only drops come out.
The transmission fluid flow will not stop completely because the transmission fluid continues to expand as its temperature increases.
[*6] When transmission fluid does not come out:
Remove the refill plug and gasket from the hybrid vehicle transmission assembly.
Add transmission fluid to the refill hole until it flows out of the overflow hole.
Use Toyota Genuine ATF WS.
Be sure to add transmission fluid slowly. If transmission fluid is added quickly, the transmission fluid may hit internal parts and bounce back, resulting in transmission fluid coming out of the refill hole.
