PRECAUTION
CAUTION:
An airbag or pretensioner may be activated by static electricity. To prevent this, be sure to touch a metal surface with your bare hands to discharge static electricity before performing this procedure.
Do not perform this procedure indoors or on rough roads where safety cannot be ensured. Also, do not deploy SRS parts near residential areas.
If this procedure is performed indoors or on rough roads where safety cannot be ensured, unforeseen injuries may occur. Also, the deployment noise creates a nuisance to nearby residents.
Tech Tips
When scrapping a vehicle equipped with an SRS or disposing of the front seat airbag assembly, be sure to deploy the airbag first in accordance with the procedure described below. If any abnormality occurs with the airbag deployment, contact the Service Dept. of the distributor.
DISPOSE OF FRONT SEAT AIRBAG ASSEMBLY LH (When Installed to Vehicle)
Note
When disposing of the front seat airbag assembly, use an unneeded vehicle to deploy the airbag.
Be sure to perform the following procedure when deploying the airbag.
Tech Tips
Prepare a battery as the power source to deploy the airbag.
Check the function of SST.
Refer to Precaution.
Remove the outer seat track cover LH.
Remove the inner seat track bracket cover LH.
Remove the front outer seat track bracket cover LH.
Remove the front inner seat track bracket cover LH.
Remove the 4 "TORX" screws from the front seat assembly LH.
Using a T50 "TORX" socket wrench, remove the 2 "TORX" screws.
Operate the slide and vertical power seat switch knob to slide the front seat assembly LH to the frontmost position.
Using a T50 "TORX" socket wrench, remove the 2 "TORX" screws.
Operate the slide and vertical power seat switch knob to slide the front seat assembly LH to the center position.
Remove the No. 2 deck board.
Disconnect the cable from the negative (-) battery terminal.
CAUTION:
Wait at least 90 seconds after disconnecting the cable from the negative (-) battery terminal to disable the SRS system.
If the airbag deploys for any reason, it may cause a serious accident.
Tilt the front seat assembly LH backward.

Disconnect the airbag connector.
Note
When disconnecting any airbag connector, take care not to damage the airbag wire harness.
Push down the housing lock and slide the CPA. (At this time, the airbag connector cannot be disconnected yet.)
Push down the housing lock again and disconnect the airbag connector.
Note
Do not push down the upper part of the CPA shown in the illustration when disconnecting the airbag connector.
Connect the cable to the negative (-) battery terminal.
Note
When disconnecting the cable, some systems need to be initialized after the cable is reconnected.
Temporarily install the front seat assembly LH with the 4 "TORX" screws.
Tighten the 4 "TORX" screws to front seat assembly LH.
Operate the slide and vertical power seat switch knob to slide the front seat assembly LH to the rearmost position.
Using a T50 "TORX" socket wrench, tighten the 2 "TORX" screws in the order shown in the illustration.
Operate the slide and vertical power seat switch knob to slide the front seat assembly LH to the frontmost position.
Using a T50 "TORX" socket wrench, tighten the 2 "TORX" screws in the order shown in the illustration.
Disconnect the cable from the negative (-) battery terminal.
CAUTION:
Wait at least 90 seconds after disconnecting the cable from the negative (-) battery terminal to disable the SRS system.
If the airbag deploys for any reason, it may cause a serious accident.
Install SST.
CAUTION:
Check that there is no looseness in the front seat assembly LH.
After connecting the following SST to each other, connect them to the front seat airbag assembly LH.
CAUTION:
Do not deploy if the front seat airbag assembly LH is loose.
If deployed while the front seat airbag assembly LH is loose, the front seat airbag assembly LH may fly off and cause serious injuries.
Note
To avoid damaging the SST connector or wire harness, do not lock the secondary lock of the twin lock.

Move SST at least 10 m (32.8 ft.) away from the front side window of the vehicle.
While maintaining sufficient clearance for the SST wire harness in the front side window, close all doors and windows of the vehicle.
CAUTION:
Do not deploy with all the doors and door windows open.
If deployed with all the doors and door windows open, dust and gas may enter the eyes or be breathed in.
Note
Take care not to damage the SST wire harness.
Connect the red clip of SST to the positive (+) battery terminal and the black clip of SST to the negative (-) battery terminal.
Deploy the airbag.
Check that no one is inside the vehicle or within a 10 m (32.8 ft.) radius of the vehicle.
Press the SST activation switch to deploy the airbag.
CAUTION:
Do not deploy with people inside or around the vehicle.
If deployed with people inside or around the vehicle, serious injuries may occur.
Tech Tips
The airbag is deployed as the LED of the SST activation switch comes on.
Remove the front seat airbag assembly LH.
CAUTION:
The front seat airbag assembly LH becomes extremely hot when the airbag is deployed, so do not touch it for at least 30 minutes after deployment.
If not left alone for 30 minutes or more, burns may occur when touched.
Do not apply water etc. to a front seat airbag assembly LH with a deployed airbag.
If water is applied to the front seat airbag assembly LH immediately after deployment, burns may occur from the resulting steam.
Always wear safety glasses and gloves when handling a deployed front seat airbag assembly LH.
If the front seat airbag assembly LH is touched without wearing safety glasses and gloves, hot parts may cause burns and dust may enter the eyes.
After removal, quickly seal the front seat airbag assembly LH in a plastic bag.
Dispose of the front seat airbag assembly LH.
Place the front seat airbag assembly LH in a plastic bag, tie it tightly and dispose of it according to local regulations.
CAUTION:
The front seat airbag assembly LH becomes extremely hot when the airbag is deployed, so do not touch it for at least 30 minutes after deployment.
If not left alone for 30 minutes or more, burns may occur when touched.
Do not apply water etc. to a front seat airbag assembly LH with a deployed airbag.
If water is applied to the front seat airbag assembly LH immediately after deployment, burns may occur from the resulting steam.
Always wear safety glasses and gloves when handling a deployed front seat airbag assembly LH.
If the front seat airbag assembly LH is touched without wearing safety glasses and gloves, hot parts may cause burns and dust may enter the eyes.

If an undeployed front seat airbag assembly LH is disposed of, and then deploys for any reason, unforeseen injuries may occur.

DISPOSE OF FRONT SEAT AIRBAG ASSEMBLY LH (When not Installed to Vehicle)

Using braided wire, tie down the front seat airbag assembly LH to an unneeded tire.

CAUTION:
If the wire harness is too thin or an alternative object is used to tie down the front seat airbag assembly LH, it may snap when the airbag is deployed. Always use a wire for vehicle use with a cross-sectional area of at least 1.25 mm2(0.0019 in.2).
Tech Tips
To calculate the area of the cross-sectional area of stripped wire:
Area = 3.14 x (Diameter)2/ 4
Install the 2 nuts to the front seat airbag assembly LH.
Wind 2 or more wires around the stud bolts of the front seat airbag assembly LH as shown in the illustration.

Position the front seat airbag assembly LH inside the tire with the airbag deployment side facing inward.

Note
The tire may be damaged by the airbag deployment, so use an unneeded tires.
Install SST.
Connect the SST connector to the front seat airbag assembly LH connector.
Place the tires.

Place at least 2 tires under the tire to which the front seat airbag assembly LH is tied.
Place at least 2 tires onto the tire to which the front seat airbag assembly LH is tied. The top tire should have a wheel installed.
Note
Do not place the SST connector under the tire because it could be damaged.
The tires and wheel may be damaged by the airbag deployment, so use unneeded tires and wheels.
Tie the tires together with 2 wires.
CAUTION:
Make sure that the wires are tight. Looseness in the wires will result in the tires breaking loose when the airbag is deployed.
Install SST.

Connect the SST connector.
Note
To avoid damaging the SST connector or wire harness, do not lock the secondary lock of the twin lock. Also, secure some slack for the SST wire harness inside the tire.
Move SST at least 10 m (32.8 ft.) away from the airbag tied down to the tires.
Deploy the airbag.
Connect the red clip of SST to the positive (+) battery terminal and the black clip of SST to the negative (-) battery terminal.
Check that no one is within a 10 m (32.8 ft.) radius of the tire to which the front seat airbag assembly LH is tied.
Press the SST activation switch to deploy the airbag.
CAUTION:
Do not deploy with people around the tire.
If deployed with people around the tire, serious injuries may occur.
