CAUTION:
Do not perform this procedure indoors or on rough roads where safety cannot be ensured. Also, do not deploy SRS parts near residential areas.
If this procedure is performed indoors or on rough roads where safety cannot be ensured, unforeseen injuries may occur. Also, the deployment noise creates a nuisance to nearby residents.
Tech Tips
When scrapping vehicles equipped with a seat belt pretensioner or disposing of a rear seat 3 point type outer belt assembly (with a seat belt pretensioner), always deploy the seat belt pretensioner first in accordance with the procedure described below. If any abnormality occurs during deployment of the seat belt pretensioner, contact the service dept. of the distributor.
DISPOSE OF REAR SEAT 3 POINT TYPE OUTER BELT ASSEMBLY (When Installed in Vehicle)
Note
When disposing of a rear seat 3 point type outer belt assembly with a seat belt pretensioner, never deploy the seat belt pretensioner in the customer's vehicle.
Be sure to observe the following procedure when deploying a seat belt pretensioner.
Tech Tips
Prepare a battery as the power source to deploy the seat belt pretensioner.
Check the function of SST.
CAUTION:
When deploying a seat belt pretensioner, always use the specified SST.
Refer to Precaution.
Disconnect the cable from negative (-) battery terminal.
CAUTION:
Wait at least 90 seconds after disconnecting the cable from the negative (-) battery terminal to disable the SRS system.
If the seat belt pretensioner deploys for any reason, it may cause a serious accident.
Remove the package tray trim panel assembly.
Disconnect the seat belt pretensioner connector.

Using a screwdriver with its tip wrapped in protective tape, pull out the locking button to release the lock and disconnect the seat belt pretensioner connector as shown in the illustration.
Install SST.
Connect the SST connector to the seat belt pretensioner.
Note
To avoid damaging the SST connector or wire harness, do not lock the secondary lock of the seat belt pretensioner connector.
Using a screwdriver with its tip wrapped in protective tape, pull out the locking button to release the lock and disconnect the seat belt pretensioner connector as shown in the illustration.
CAUTION:
Do not activate the seat belt pretensioner if the seat belt pretensioner is loose.
If the seat belt pretensioner is activated when the seat belt pretensioner is loose, the seat belt pretensioner may move out of position and cause unexpected injuries.
Do not activate the seat belt pretensioner when the seatbelt has slack.
If the seat belt pretensioner is activated when the seatbelt has slack, the seatbelt will be forcefully wound up and could cause a serious injury.

Move SST at least 10 m (32.8 ft.) away from the front side window of the vehicle.
Maintaining sufficient clearance for the SST wire harness in the front side window, close all doors and windows of the vehicle.
Note
Take care not to damage the SST wire harness.
CAUTION:
Do not open all doors or door windows when activating the seat belt pretensioner.
If the seat belt pretensioner is activated with all doors or door windows open, particulate matter or gas may be scattered, and could enter the eyes or be inhaled.
Note
Take care not to damage the SST wire harness.
Connect the red clip of SST to the positive (+) battery terminal and black clip to the negative (-) battery terminal.
Deploy the seat belt pretensioner.
Check that no one is inside the vehicle or within a 10 m (32.8 ft.) radius of the vehicle.
Press the SST activation switch to deploy the seat belt pretensioner.
Tech Tips
The seat belt pretensioner will deploy at the same time the LED of SST illuminates.
CAUTION:
Do not deploy with people inside or around the vehicle.
If deployed with people inside or around the vehicle, serious injuries may occur.
Note
Before activating the seat belt pretensioner, be sure to call out in a loud voice to warn other people in and around the work area.
Tech Tips
The seat belt pretensioner is deployed as the LED of the SST activation switch comes on.
Dispose of the rear seat 3 point type outer belt assembly.
Remove the rear seat 3 point type outer belt assembly.
CAUTION:
The seat belt pretensioner becomes extremely hot when the seat belt pretensioner is deployed, so do not touch it for at least 30 minutes after deployment.
If not left alone for 30 minutes or more, burns may occur when touched.
Do not apply water to a deployed seat belt pretensioner.
If water is applied to the seat belt pretensioner immediately after deployment, burns may occur from the resulting steam.
Always wear safety glasses and gloves when handling a deployed seat belt pretensioner.
If the seat belt pretensioner is touched without wearing safety glasses and gloves, hot parts may cause burns and dust may enter the eyes.
Place the seat belt pretensioner in a plastic bag, tie it tightly and dispose of it according to local regulations.
CAUTION:
Never dispose of a seat belt pretensioner that has an undeployed seat belt pretensioner.
If a seat belt pretensioner with an undeployed seat belt pretensioner is disposed of, it could deploy unexpectedly and cause serious injury.
Note
Always wash your hands with water after completing the operation.
DISPOSE OF REAR SEAT 3 POINT TYPE OUTER BELT ASSEMBLY (When Not Installed in Vehicle)

Be sure to observe the following procedure when deploying a seat belt pretensioner.

Disconnect the cable from negative (-) battery terminal.

Remove the rear seat 3 point type outer belt assembly.
Cut the seat belt webbing.

Wind the seat belt webbing with the retractor.
When the seat belt webbing is sufficiently wound, cut the seat belt webbing approximately 100 mm (3.94 in.) from the retractor, as shown in the illustration.
Tech Tips
The retractor resistance increases in correlation with how much the seat belt webbing is wound.
Connect SST.
After connecting the following SST to each other, connect them to the seat belt pretensioner.
Note
To avoid damaging the SST connector or wire harness, do not lock the secondary lock of the seat belt pretensioner connector.

Using braided wire, tie down the seat belt pretensioner to an unneeded tire.

CAUTION:
If the wire harness is too thin or an alternative object is used to tie down the seat belt seat belt pretensioner, it may snap when the seat belt pretensioner is deployed. Always use a wire for vehicle use with an area of at least 1.25 mm2(0.0019 in.2).

To calculate the area of the cross-sectional area of stripped wire:

Position the seat belt pretensioner inside the tire with the seat belt pretensioner deployment side facing inside.

CAUTION:
Do not install the seat belt pretensioner with the deployment side facing the disc wheel.
When securing the seat belt pretensioner, make sure there is no looseness in the wire harness.
If the deployment side is facing the disc wheel or the wire harness is loosely wrapped, the deployed seat belt pretensioner and tire may fly off and cause serious injuries.
Note
The tires may be damaged by the seat belt pretensioner deployment, so use unneeded tires.
Place the tires.
Place the seat belt pretensioner on the ground and cover it with an unneeded tire and wheel assembly.
Note
Position the seat belt pretensioner as shown in the illustration.
The tire and wheel assembly may be damaged by the seat belt pretensioner deployment, so use an unneeded tire and wheel assembly.
Move SST at least 10 m (32.8 ft.) away from the tire and wheel assembly.
Note
Take care not to damage the SST wire harness.

Deploy the seat belt pretensioner.
Connect the red clip of SST to the positive (+) battery terminal and the black clip of SST to the negative (-) battery terminal.
Check that no one is within a 10 m (32.8 ft.) radius of the wheel to which the seat belt pretensioner is tied.
Press the SST activation switch and deploy the seat belt pretensioner.
CAUTION:
Do not deploy with people around the tire.
If deployed with people around the tire, serious injuries may occur.
