OPERATION
The special functions of the smart entry and start system only work when the electrical key transmitter sub-assembly is in the actuation area formed by the antennas.
The indoor electrical key antenna (front), indoor electrical key antenna (rear), and indoor electrical key antenna (luggage compartment) form the interior actuation area.
The door electrical key antennas and outside electrical key antenna (luggage compartment door) form the exterior actuation area.

|
Interior Actuation Area | |
Exterior Actuation Area |
| Actuation Area | Detail |
|---|---|
| Interior | The interior actuation area of the indoor electrical key antennas (front, rear) is formed when the driver door is opened or closed, when the engine switch is pushed, when a warning is activated, or when a lock sensor is on. |
| Exterior | The exterior actuation area formed by the front and rear door electrical key antennas (LH, RH) and outside electrical key antenna (luggage compartment door) is approximately 0.7 to 1.0 m (2.3 to 3.3 ft.) from the outside door handle or the center of the rear bumper. |
| Around Front Doors and Rear Doors | The exterior actuation area of the door electrical key antennas is formed by transmitting a request signal every 0.25 seconds while the engine switch is off and each door is locked. In this way it detects the presence of an electrical key transmitter sub-assembly. When locking the door using the lock sensor on the outside door handle, the actuation area is formed when the lock sensor is touched. |
| Around Luggage Compartment Door | The exterior actuation area of the outside electrical key antenna (luggage compartment door) is formed when the luggage compartment door open switch is on. |
SYSTEM CONTROL
Start Function
The start function has different power source change patterns to suit the brake pedal state and shift lever position.
| Pattern | Brake Pedal | Shift Lever Position | Power Source Change Pattern |
|---|---|---|---|
| A | Depressed | P or N | When the engine switch is pushed once.
|
| B | Not Depressed | P | Each time the engine switch is pushed.
|
| C | Except P | Each time the engine switch is pushed.
|
|
| D | - | P | When the engine switch is pushed in the on (IG) condition.
|
| E | - | Except P | When the engine switch is pushed in the on (IG) condition.
|
Note
Normally, the operation of the engine switch is disabled while the vehicle is being driven. However, in an emergency, by pushing the engine switch for approximately 2 seconds or more or pushing the engine switch 3 times or more in a row, the driver can stop the engine while the vehicle is in motion.
If no signals are transmitted to the certification ECU (smart key ECU assembly) due to malfunctions in the stop light switch or park/neutral position switch assembly, the engine may not start when the engine switch is pushed with the brake pedal depressed. In such cases, performing the following procedure may enable the engine to start: 1) push the engine switch to turn the power source from off to on (ACC), and 2) push the engine switch again and hold it for 15 seconds or more.
The above 2 operations must be applied only in emergency situations. Under normal conditions, the engine must not be stopped by pushing the engine switch while driving. Also, it should not be started without depressing the brake pedal or when the shift lever is in any position other than P or N.
Cranking Hold Function
Once the engine switch is pressed, this function operates the starter until the engine starts, provided that the brake pedal is depressed. This prevents application of the starter for an inadequate length of time and it also prevents the engine from being cranked after it has started. For details see page for 2GR-FE, see page for 2AR-FE, Click here for 6AR-FSE.
Entry Unlock
While the user carries the electrical key transmitter sub-assembly in the exterior actuation area, and any of the outside door handle is held (the back side of the handle is touched), the door unlock sensor built into the handle detects it and the doors are unlocked.
When the doors are unlocked, the hazard warning lights flash twice as an answer back.
| *1 | Unlock Sensor | - | - |
Entry Lock
When the user gets out of the vehicle while carrying the electrical key transmitter sub-assembly and touches the lock sensor of the door outside handle within the exterior actuation area with all the doors closed, the doors are locked.
| *1 | Lock Sensor | - | - |
Luggage Compartment Door Open
The luggage compartment door is opened when the luggage compartment door opener switch is pressed within the luggage compartment door exterior actuation area while the user is carrying the electrical key transmitter sub-assembly.

Battery Saving
Battery saving preserves the vehicle and key batteries. It is activated when the vehicle remains parked for a long time and when the electrical key transmitter sub-assembly is left in the exterior actuation area.
| Condition | Control | Reinstatement Condition |
|---|---|---|
| When the vehicle remains parked for a long time. |
|
When the engine switch is turned on (IG), the control is canceled and the system is returned to normal. |
|
|
|
| When the electrical key transmitter sub-assembly is left in the exterior detection area. |
|
|
In addition to the above functions, the auto power off function helps to reduce drain on the vehicle auxiliary battery by turning the power source mode to off when approximately 60 minutes have elapsed since (a) the shift lever was moved to P with the power source on (ACC), or (b) the engine was turned off with the shift lever in P, the power source on (IG) and the vehicle stationary.
Battery Saving Function of Electrical Key Transmitter Sub-assembly
This function cancels the signal reception waiting state of the electrical key transmitter sub-assembly, reducing the consumption of current from its battery.
The electrical key transmitter sub-assembly can be placed into and taken out of battery saving mode. When the electrical key transmitter sub-assembly is in battery saving mode, the smart entry and start system will not be able to detect the transmitter, as the transmitter will not respond to signals from the vehicle. The smart entry and start system function will not operate if the electrical key transmitter sub-assembly is in battery saving mode.
Pressing the unlock switch of the electrical key transmitter sub-assembly twice while pressing the lock switch (the indicator light of the electrical key transmitter sub-assembly blinks 4 times) selects battery saving mode for the electrical key transmitter sub-assembly.
Battery saving mode can be canceled by pressing any switch on the electrical key transmitter sub-assembly.
Key Cancel
The following system functions can be deactivated by using the key cancel procedure.
Entry Lock
Entry Unlock
Prevention of Key Confinement
Warning
The system functions can be deactivated by using the following key cancel procedure when the engine switch is off and the driver door is closed and unlocked.
| Key Cancel Procedure |
When the cancel procedure is complete, the buzzer sounds twice. Meanwhile, when the procedure is performed again to resume the system, the buzzer sounds once. |
*: Perform all these 3 steps within 30 seconds of the previous step.
Key Code Registration Function
The table below shows the 4 special ID code registration function modes through which up to 7 different transmitter recognition codes can be registered. The codes are electronically registered (written to and stored) in the EEPROM. For details, refer to the Repair Manual.
| Mode | Function |
|---|---|
| Rewrite | Clears all previously registered codes and registers only the newly received codes. This mode is used whenever a transmitter or the certification ECU (smart key ECU assembly) is replaced. |
| Add | Adds a newly received code while preserving previously registered codes. This mode is used when adding a new transmitter. If the number of codes exceeds 7, the oldest registered code is cleared first. |
| Confirm | Confirms how many codes are currently registered. When adding a new code, this mode is used to check how many codes already exist. |
| Prohibit | To clear all the registered codes and to prohibit the wireless door lock function. This mode is used when an electrical key transmitter sub-assembly is lost. |
FUNCTION
Entry Function
The entry function consists of the following functions:
| Function | Outline |
|---|---|
| Wireless Door Lock Control | This function is a convenient system for locking and unlocking all the doors and luggage compartment door at a distance. The operation of this function is the same as that in the wireless door lock control system. |
| Entry Illumination | When an electrical key transmitter sub-assembly enters the exterior actuation area of the door electrical key antennas, the interior light illuminates. |
| Entry Unlock | When an electrical key transmitter sub-assembly is located in the exterior actuation area of any door electrical key antenna, the door will unlock after the inner part of an outside door handle is touched.
|
| Entry Unlock Mode Switching | Allows switching between 2 modes that can be operated with the entry unlock function.
|
| Entry Lock | When an electrical key transmitter sub-assembly is located in the exterior actuation area of an electrical key antenna and the engine switch is off, all doors can be locked by simply touching the lock sensor. |
| Luggage Compartment Door Open | When an electrical key transmitter sub-assembly is in the exterior actuation area of the outside electrical key antenna (luggage compartment door), the luggage compartment door opens manually by simply pushing the luggage compartment door open switch. |
| Prevention of Key Confinement | The key confinement prevention function prevents the vehicle from being locked with an electrical key transmitter sub-assembly left inside it. This function operates in 2 different situations: when the lock knob is used (keyless lock) and when an outside door handle lock sensor is used (lock sensor). |
| Warning | When any of the situations below occur, the smart entry and start system causes the certification ECU (smart key ECU assembly) to sound the buzzer in the combination meter and the wireless door lock buzzer, and indicates a warning on the multi-information display in order to alert the driver.
|
| Battery Saving | If the electrical key transmitter sub-assembly remains within the exterior actuation area of any electrical key antenna (driver, front passenger, or luggage compartment door), the system maintains periodic communication with the electrical key transmitter sub-assembly. Therefore, if the vehicle remains parked in that state for a long time, the key battery and the vehicle battery could be drained. |
| Key Cancel | The following key functions can be canceled by following the specified procedure.
|
| Key Code Registration | A total of 7 electrical key transmitter sub-assemblies can be registered. Key registration enables the registering (writing and storing) of transmitter recognition codes in the EEPROM that is contained in the certification ECU (smart key ECU assembly). |
The wireless door lock control system has the following functions:

CONSTRUCTION
Electrical Key Transmitter Sub-assembly
The electrical key transmitter sub-assembly consists of a mechanical key, transmitter for the wireless door lock control, transceiver for the entry function, and transponder chip for the engine immobiliser function.
This mechanical key operates the driver door lock cylinder, luggage compartment door lock cylinder and glove box lock cylinder, but cannot be used to start the engine.
The transmitter for the wireless door lock control has a lock switch, unlock switch, panic switch*, and luggage compartment door open switch.
*: Models with Panic Switch
The transceiver in the electrical key transmitter sub-assembly receives the signals from the antennas and returns the ID code of the electrical key transmitter sub-assembly to the door control receiver.
The transponder chip for the engine immobiliser function returns a signal to the engine switch as a response to the radio wave signals received from the engine switch.

Combination Meter Assembly
When the certification ECU (smart key ECU assembly) detects an abnormality with the smart entry and start system, a message appears on a multi-information display. If the engine is stopped in this state, it might not be possible to restart it.

Certification ECU (Smart Key ECU Assembly)
The certification ECU (smart key ECU assembly) includes the IG1 relay and IG2 relay actuation circuits, CPU, and hold circuit.
The hold circuit is provided to prevent the power supply to the relays from being cut off when an abnormality occurs in the IG1 relay and/or IG2 relay actuation circuits while driving.
Tech Tips
The certification ECU (smart key ECU assembly) constantly stores the present power source mode in its memory. Therefore, if the power to the certification ECU (smart key ECU assembly) is interrupted due to the removal of the battery, the certification ECU (smart key ECU assembly) restores the power source after the battery is reconnected.
For this reason, if the battery is removed when the power source is in a mode other than off, the power will be restored to the vehicle at the same time the power is restored to the certification ECU (smart key ECU assembly) by reconnecting the battery.
Therefore, before removing the battery, be sure to turn the power source off.
Door Control Receiver (Multi-channel)
The electrical key transmitter sub-assembly and door control receiver can operate on two different RF channels. When an electrical key transmitter sub-assembly is brought within an exterior detection area, key verification begins. If key verification fails due to radio wave interference, the channel will be switched and key verification will be performed again.
The multi-channel system begins verification using the channel on which the last verification was successfully performed. When verification fails, the system switches to the other channel.
| *a | Exterior detection areas are created using LF waves (emitted from the vehicle at intervals of 0.25 seconds) to receive a response from the electrical key transmitter sub-assembly. |
| *b | When the electrical key transmitter sub-assembly is brought into an exterior detection area, it receives LF waves from the vehicle. Using RF waves, the electrical key transmitter sub-assembly responds to the vehicle. |
| *c | Upon receiving the response from the electrical key transmitter sub-assembly, the certification ECU (smart key ECU assembly) activates the electrical key antennas (outside) one by one. Using LF waves, the certification ECU (smart key ECU assembly) determines which exterior detection area the electrical key transmitter sub-assembly is in. |
| *d | The electrical key transmitter sub-assembly receives the LF waves from the vehicle and responds using RF waves. (The certification ECU (smart key ECU assembly) recognizes which exterior detection area the electrical key transmitter sub-assembly is in.) |
| *e | The certification ECU (smart key ECU assembly) sends registered key ID information to the electrical key transmitter sub-assembly using LF waves. (Up to 7 key IDs can be registered.) |
| *f | The electrical key transmitter sub-assembly sends the key ID information using RF waves. When the certification ECU (smart key ECU assembly) receives it, verification completes. |
| *g | Radio wave interference (Channel switching) |
The multi-channel system changes channels when communication on the RF band (*b, *d and *f) is interrupted by radio wave interference.
Refer to the table below to confirm when the system changes channels.
| *b or *d is NG | *f is NG | |||
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Condition | RF waves cannot be received | RF waves cannot be received properly | RF waves cannot be received | RF waves cannot be received properly |
| Channel switching | Channels will not be switched. | Channels will be switched. | Channels will be switched. | Channels will be switched. |
DIAGNOSIS
Start Function
The certification ECU (smart key ECU assembly) can detect malfunctions in the smart entry and start system when the power source is on (IG).
When the ECU detects a malfunction, a message is displayed on the multi-information display to warn the driver. At the same time, the ECU stores a 5-digit Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) in its memory.
The indicator light warning continues for 15 seconds even after the engine switch is turned off.
The 5-digit DTCs can be read after connecting the Global TechStream (GTS) to the DLC3.
The smart entry and start system may not operate successfully if a malfunction occurs.
