SFI SYSTEM DETAILS KNOCK CONTROL SENSOR
CONSTRUCTION
The vibrations of the cylinder block sub-assembly are picked up by the sensor and converted into an electrical signal.
Knock is a vibratory phenomenon due to an exploding combustion of the air/fuel mixture in one of the 3 cylinders.
The engine knock information, transmitted by the sensor, enables the ECM to reduce the ignition advance.
During combustion, vibrations caused by engine knock are transmitted through the inertia mass to the piezo-electric elements of the sensor.
The sensor transmits voltage peaks to the ECM when "engine knock" occurs.
Based on the "engine knock" information, the ECM reduces the ignition advance, simultaneously making the fuel/air mixture richer.
