DESCRIPTION

The waste gate valve is installed in the turbine housing. The ECM uses duty control to operate the DC motor inside the waste gate valve actuator assembly to control the opening amount according to the operation status.

The waste gate valve opening amount is detected by the waste gate valve position sensor and transmitted to the ECM. When high load engine operation is necessary, the waste gate valve closes to increase the torque and improve the response during acceleration. In the low-engine-load operating range, the waste gate valve opens to lower the exhaust manifold pressure to further reduce pumping losses and improve fuel economy.

MONITOR DESCRIPTION

  1. WASTE GATE VALVE ACTIVE DETECTION

While the vehicle is stopped after engine warm-up, the ECM forcibly operates the waste gate valve to make contact for 3 seconds each in the fully open and fully closed positions while the engine is idling with accelerator pedal fully released. The ECM judges from the output voltage of the position sensor whether the following 3 items are within the specified range.

    • Position sensor voltage at waste gate valve fully open contact

    • Position sensor voltage at waste gate valve fully closed contact

    • Difference between position sensor voltages at waste gate valve fully open and fully closed contact

  2. WASTE GATE VALVE MALFUNCTION (P024300, P024700)

When any or all of the output voltages during waste gate valve fully open contact and fully closed contact and the difference in the voltage change amount are outside the specified range, the ECM stores a DTC.

  3. WASTE GATE VALVE ACTUATOR STUCK OPEN (P25B372, P25B572)

During waste gate valve active detection, when the output voltage at waste gate valve fully open contact is within the specified range, the output voltage at fully closed contact is outside the specified range and the voltage change amount is smaller than the specified value, the valve is judged to be stuck open and the ECM stores a DTC.

  4. WASTE GATE VALVE ACTUATOR STUCK CLOSED (P25B473, P25B673)

During waste gate valve active detection, when the output voltage at waste gate valve fully closed contact is within the specified range, the output voltage at fully open contact is outside the specified range and the voltage change amount is smaller than the specified value, the valve is judged to be stuck closed and the ECM stores a DTC.

Tech Tips

  • Read Freeze Frame Data using the GTS. The ECM records vehicle and driving condition information as Freeze Frame Data the moment a DTC is stored. When troubleshooting, Freeze Frame Data can help determine if the vehicle was moving or stationary, if the engine was warmed up or not, if the air fuel ratio was lean or rich, and other data from the time the malfunction occurred.

  • Bank 1 refers to the bank that includes the No. 1 cylinder*.

*: The No. 1 cylinder is the cylinder which is farthest from the transmission.

  • Bank 2 refers to the bank that does not include the No. 1 cylinder.
