    4. Remove the reserve tank cap. Then drain the engine coolant.

      Tech Tips

Collect the engine coolant in a container and dispose of it according to the regulations in your area.

    5. Loosen the cylinder block drain cock plug.

    6. Tighten the cylinder block drain cock plug.

      Torque:
      12.7 N*m  { 130 kgf*cm, 9 ft.*lbf }
    7. Tighten the radiator drain cock plug by hand.

    8. Disconnect the hose from the cylinder block water drain cock plug.

    9. Disconnect the hose from the radiator drain cock.

  9. ADD ENGINE COOLANT

    CAUTION:

Do not remove the water filler cap sub-assembly or reserve tank cap while the engine and radiator assembly are still hot. Pressurized, hot engine coolant and steam may be released and cause serious burns.

    Note

    • Be sure to install the water filler cap sub-assembly and reserve tank cap in the correct positions since incorrect installation may cause a malfunction.

    • Do not substitute plain water for engine coolant.

    Tech Tips

Before adding coolant, turn the A/C switch off.

    1. Remove the water filler cap sub-assembly and reserve tank cap.

    2. B006A1ZC02
      *1 Air Drain Cock Plug

Using a 6 mm hexagon socket wrench, loosen the air drain cock plug.

    3. B0069V2C02
      *a Air Hose

Connect a air hose with an inside diameter of 9 mm (0.354 in.) to the air drain cock as shown in the illustration.

    4. Pull out the air hose to the top of the vehicle as shown in the illustration.

    5. Add engine coolant to the radiator reserve tank assembly until engine coolant overflows from the air drain cock hole. Then using a 6 mm hexagon socket wrench, tighten the air drain cock plug.

      Torque:
      1.5 N*m  { 15 kgf*cm, 13 in.*lbf }
    6. B006DS5

Add engine coolant to the level shown in the illustration.

      Specified Capacity
      Item Specified Condition
for 2WD 10.6 liters (11.2 US qts, 9.3 Imp. qts)
for AWD 10.5 liters (11.1 US qts, 9.2 Imp. qts)

      Note

Do not substitute plain water for engine coolant.

      Tech Tips

LEXUS vehicles are filled with TOYOTA SLLC at the factory. In order to avoid damaging the engine cooling system and other technical problems, only use TOYOTA SLLC or similar high quality ethylene glycol based non-silicate, non-amine, non-nitrite, non-borate coolant with long-life hybrid organic acid technology (coolant with long-life hybrid organic acid technology is a combination of low phosphates and organic acids).

    7. Squeeze the No. 1 radiator hose and No. 3 radiator hose several times by hand, and then check the level of the engine coolant.

If the engine coolant level is low, add engine coolant.

    8. Install the reserve tank cap.

    9. Disconnect the air hose from the air drain cock.

    10. Pour coolant of the specified concentration into the coolant filler hole on the engine side until the coolant level reaches the hole, and then install the water filler cap sub-assembly.

    11. Bleed air from the cooling system.

      Note

      • Before starting the engine, turn the A/C switch off.

      • Adjust the heater control to the maximum hot setting.

      • Adjust the blower speed to the low setting.

      1. Start the engine and with the shift lever in P and the engine speed at 1500 rpm or more continuously for 5 seconds or more, switch the water control valve to injection control and warm the engine.

      2. Squeeze the No. 1 radiator hose and No. 3 radiator hose several times by hand to bleed air.

        CAUTION:

        • Because the engine, radiator assembly, No. 1 radiator hose and No. 3 radiator hose are extremely hot, do not perform these procedures without wearing protective gloves.

        • Performing these procedures without wearing protective gloves could result in burns.

        • Touching rotating components such as the cooling fan could result in your hand or clothing getting caught and pulled in.

        Note

        • Make sure that the radiator reserve tank assembly still has some engine coolant in it.

        • If the engine coolant temperature gauge indicates an excessive temperature, turn off the engine and let it cool.

        • If there is not enough engine coolant, the engine may overheat or be seriously damaged.

        • If the radiator reserve tank assembly does not have enough engine coolant, perform the following: 1) stop the engine, 2) wait until the engine coolant cools down, and 3) add engine coolant until the radiator reserve tank assembly is filled to the full line.

    12. Stop the engine, and wait until the engine coolant cools down.

    13. Remove the reserve tank cap and check the engine coolant level.

If the engine coolant level is low, add engine coolant.

    14. Add engine coolant to the F line on the radiator reserve tank assembly.
