VEHICLE STABILITY CONTROL SYSTEM TEST MODE PROCEDURE

  1. WARNING LIGHT AND INDICATOR LIGHT INITIAL CHECK

    1. Release the parking brake.

      Note:

Before releasing the parking brake, use wheel chocks to secure the vehicle.

      Tip:

When the parking brake is applied or the brake fluid level is low, the brake warning light comes on.

    2. When the ignition switch is turned to ON, check that the ABS warning, brake warning, slip indicator, TRC OFF indicator and VSC OFF indicator lights all come on for approximately 3 seconds.

      Tip:
      • If the skid control ECU (brake actuator assembly) stores a DTC, the ABS warning and slip indicator lights will come on.

Depending on the DTC, the tire pressure warning light (w/ tire pressure warning system) may blink for 63 seconds and then remain on.

  2. SENSOR CHECK USING TEST MODE (SIGNAL CHECK)

    Note:

Perform Test Mode with the vehicle stopped.

    Tip:

DTCs are stored if any malfunctions are detected during the check of each sensor.

    1. Procedure to enter Test Mode

      1. Turn the ignition switch off.

      2. Check that the steering wheel is centered.

      3. Apply the parking brake.

      4. Check that the shift lever is in N (for multi-mode manual transaxle).

      5. Check that the shift lever is in neutral (for manual transaxle).

      6. Connect the GTS to the DLC3.

      7. Turn the ignition switch to ON.

      8. Turn the GTS on.

      9. Switch the skid control ECU (brake actuator assembly) to Test Mode using the GTS. Enter the following menus: Chassis / ABS/VSC/TRC / Utility / Signal Check.

        Chassis > ABS/VSC/TRC > Utility

        Tester Display

        Signal Check

      10. Check that the ABS warning, tire pressure warning (w/ tire pressure warning system) and slip indicator lights come on for several seconds and then blink in the Test Mode pattern. The TRC OFF indicator light comes on during Test Mode.

        Tip:
        • If the ABS warning and slip indicator lights do not blink, inspect the ABS warning and slip indicator light circuits.

        • If the tire pressure warning light (w/ tire pressure warning system) does not blink, inspect the tire pressure warning system (w/ tire pressure warning system).

        • If the TRC OFF indicator light does not come on, inspect the TRC OFF indicator light circuit.

      11. Check the ABS sensors.

        Tip:

Check that the ABS warning light is blinking in the Test Mode pattern before performing the following ABS sensor checks.

    2. VSC OFF Switch Check

      1. Press the VSC OFF switch.

      2. Check that the VSC OFF indicator light comes on.

      3. Press the VSC OFF switch again.

    3. Tire Pressure Warning Reset Switch Check (w/ Tire Pressure Warning System)

      1. Press the tire pressure warning reset switch.

      2. Check that the tire pressure warning light blinks in the Test Mode pattern and then comes on.

      3. Press the tire pressure warning reset switch again.

    4. Speed Sensor Check

      1. Drive the vehicle straight-ahead.

Accelerate the vehicle to a speed of 47 to 55 km/h (29 to 34 mph) for several seconds.

        Note:

If the vehicle is driven at 80 km/h or more after the ABS warning light turns off, the speed sensor check will be performed again. In this situation, the ABS warning light will start blinking again.

        Tip:
        • The speed sensor check may not complete if wheelspin occurs.

        • The speed sensor check may not complete if the speed sensor check is started while turning the steering wheel.

      2. Check that the ABS warning light goes off.

        Tip:
        • The ABS warning light goes off when the sensor check has completed.

        • The ABS warning light comes on immediately after a malfunction has been detected during the speed sensor check.

      3. Stop the vehicle.

        Note:

If the sensor check has not completed, the ABS warning light will blink while the vehicle is being driven and the ABS will not operate.

        Tip:

When the sensor check has completed, the ABS warning light goes off while the vehicle is being driven, and blinks in the Test Mode pattern while the vehicle is stopped.

    5. End of Sensor Check

      1. If the sensor checks have completed, the ABS warning light blinks in the Test Mode pattern when the vehicle is stopped and the ABS warning light goes off while the vehicle is being driven.

        Note:

If the sensor checks have not completed, the ABS warning light will blink while the vehicle is being driven and the ABS will not operate.

    6. Reading Sensor Check DTCs

      1. Read the DTCs by following the GTS screen.

        Note:
        • If only DTCs other than Test Mode sensor check DTCs are displayed, repair the malfunctions and clear the DTCs.

        • If Test Mode sensor check DTCs and other DTCs are displayed or if only Test Mode sensor check DTCs are displayed, repair the malfunctions, clear the DTCs, and perform Test Mode inspection again.

        Tip:

        See "Sensor Check DTCs".

      2. Turn the ignition switch off and disconnect the GTS.
