DESCRIPTION

In the VVT system, the appropriate intake and exhaust valve open and close timing is controlled by the ECM. The ECM performs intake and exhaust valve control by performing the following: 1) controlling the camshaft and camshaft timing oil control valve, and operating the camshaft timing gear; and 2) changing the relative positions of the gaps between the camshaft and crankshaft.

Note:

After replacing the ECM, perform idle learning.

Tip:

Read freeze frame data using the GTS. The ECM records vehicle and driving condition information as freeze frame data the moment a DTC is stored. When troubleshooting, freeze frame data can help determine if the vehicle was moving or stationary, if the engine was warmed up or not, if the air-fuel ratio was lean or rich, and other data from the time the malfunction occurred.

PROCEDURE

  1. CHECK ANY OTHER DTCS OUTPUT (IN ADDITION TO DTC P0016 AND P0017)

    1. Connect the GTS to the DLC3.

    2. Turn the ignition switch to ON.

    3. Turn the GTS on.

    4. Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine and ECT / Trouble Codes.

    5. Read the DTCs.

      Powertrain > Engine and ECT > Trouble Codes

  2. PERFORM ACTIVE TEST USING GTS (OPERATE CAMSHAFT TIMING OIL CONTROL VALVE ASSEMBLY)

    1. Connect the GTS to the DLC3.

    2. Start the engine.

    3. Turn the GTS on.

    4. Warm up the engine.

    5. Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine and ECT / Active Test / Control the VVT System (Bank 1) or Control the VVT Exhaust Linear (Bank1).

      Powertrain > Engine and ECT > Active Test

    6. Check the engine speed when operating the camshaft timing oil control valve assembly using the GTS.

  7. CHECK WHETHER DTC OUTPUT RECURS

    1. Connect the GTS to the DLC3.

    2. Turn the ignition switch to ON.

    3. Turn the GTS on.

    4. Clear the DTCs.

      Powertrain > Engine and ECT > Clear DTCs

    5. Turn the ignition switch off and wait for at least 30 seconds.

    6. Start the engine and warm it up.

    7. Drive the vehicle for 20 minutes or more.

    8. Turn the GTS on.

    9. Connect the GTS to the DLC3.

    10. Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine and ECT / Trouble Codes / Pending.

    11. Read the DTCs.

      Powertrain > Engine and ECT > Trouble Codes

      OK

      DTCs are not output.
