SFI SYSTEM(w/ Canister Pump Module), Diagnostic DTC:P046012, P046014

DTC Code DTC Name
P046012 Fuel Level Sensor "A" Circuit Short to Battery
P046014 Fuel Level Sensor "A" Circuit Short to Ground or Open

DESCRIPTION

The fuel sender gauge is located inside the fuel tank and measures the amount of fuel. The fuel sender gauge converts the fuel level in the fuel tank into a output value, and outputs this value. The ECM determines when it is necessary to refuel the vehicle based on changes in the output value of the fuel sender gauge.

DTC No. Detection Item DTC Detection Condition Trouble Area MIL Memory Note
P046012 Fuel Level Sensor "A" Circuit Short to Battery Fuel sender gauge assembly output resistance is less than 7 Ω for 30 seconds or more (2 trip detection logic).
  • Open or short in fuel sender gauge circuit

  • Fuel sender gauge assembly

  • Combination meter assembly

  • ECM

Comes on DTC stored SAE: P0463
P046014 Fuel Level Sensor "A" Circuit Short to Ground or Open Fuel sender gauge assembly output resistance is higher than 480 Ω for 30 seconds or more (2 trip detection logic).
  • Open or short in fuel sender gauge circuit

  • Fuel sender gauge assembly

  • Combination meter assembly

  • ECM

Comes on DTC stored SAE: P0462

MONITOR DESCRIPTION

The combination meter assembly sends Fuel sender gauge assembly signals to the ECM via CAN communication. When the engine switch is on (IG), if the output resistance of the fuel level sensor is less than 7 Ω or higher than 480 Ω for 30 seconds or more, the ECM will illuminate the MIL and store this DTC.

Tech Tips

  • After repair has been completed, clear the DTC and then check that the vehicle has returned to normal by performing the following All Readiness check procedure.

  • When clearing the permanent DTCs, refer to the "CLEAR PERMANENT DTC" procedure.

  1. Connect the GTS to the DLC3.

  2. Turn the engine switch on (IG).

  3. Turn the GTS on.

  4. Clear the DTCs (even if no DTCs are stored, perform the clear DTC procedure).

  5. Turn the engine switch off and wait for at least 30 seconds.

  6. Turn the engine switch on (IG) [A].

  7. Turn the GTS on.

  8. Wait 30 seconds or more [B].

  9. Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine / Trouble Codes [C].

  10. Read the pending DTCs.

    Tech Tips

    • If a pending DTC is output, the system is malfunctioning.

    • If a pending DTC is not output, perform the following procedure.

  11. Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine / Utility / All Readiness.

  12. Input the DTC: P046012 or P046014.

  13. Check the DTC judgment result.

    GTS Display Description
    NORMAL
    • DTC judgment completed

    • System normal

    ABNORMAL
    • DTC judgment completed

    • System abnormal

    INCOMPLETE
    • DTC judgment not completed

    • Perform driving pattern after confirming DTC enabling conditions

    Tech Tips

    • If the judgment result shows NORMAL, the system is normal.

    • If the judgment result shows ABNORMAL, the system has a malfunction.

    • If the judgment result shows INCOMPLETE or N/A, perform steps [A] and [C] again.

Tech Tips

Read freeze frame data using the Techstream. The ECM records vehicle and driving condition information as freeze frame data the moment a DTC is stored. When troubleshooting, freeze frame data can help determine if the vehicle was moving or stationary, if the engine was warmed up or not, if the air fuel ratio was lean or rich, and other data from the time the malfunction occurred.

PROCEDURE

  1. CHECK HARNESS AND CONNECTOR (FUEL SENDER GAUGE ASSEMBLY - COMBINATION METER ASSEMBLY)

    1. Disconnect the fuel sender gauge assembly connector.

    2. Disconnect the combination meter assembly connector.

    3. Measure the resistance according to the value(s) in the table below.

      Standard Resistance
      Tester Connection Condition Specified Condition
      I10-27 (FR) - b2-1 (FS) Always Below 1 Ω
      I10-28 (FE) - b2-2 (FE) Always Below 1 Ω
